| Oecusse is a very poor area of East Timor and has no passable road connection to the rest of East Timor . It is reached by a twice weekly ferry service from Dili. The population is 47,000: there are no banking facilities or land-line phones. There is no electricity outside Oecusse town.
The aim was to provide support for
Taibocco
School to teach computer skills to the highest achieving children at Oecusse Senior High School and identify opportunities for sustainable development.
We were to start reaching objectives by supplying 10 new networked computers, scanner and printer to be used by Senior High School students. The District Administrator made space and furniture available.
We were greatly assisted in Oecusse by the former Timorese Ambassador to Australia Senor Jorge Teme.
Angelo Seco - a resident of Oecusse spent two months training at ETDA in Dili and was ready to start teaching. His wages were paid by the Foundation. Unfortunately the computers were held in a container on the wharf at Dili for 2 years because of a political dispute on payment of duty. This very disappointing situation is affecting many other contributors of donated materials.
January 2008, now that the political situation has stablized in East Timor. We hope to be able to contribute again in Occusse.
